Its an eggs life

Every cycle 15-20 eggs start to mature in the ovaries.

Each egg lives in its own follicle.

The first follicle to mature will burst through the ovary wall and start its journey into the fallopian tubes.

Where if it is fertilised it will start to grow. The egg will only live for ONE day, whereas sperm can live up to FIVE and possibly SEVEN days.

What happens to all of the other eggs?

They all distinigrate.

What happens to the follicle surrounding the released egg?

That becomes the corpus luteum and produces large doses of progesterone, if the egg is not fertilised then progesterone stops and your period starts.
